Local Heros Clear Shouldn't Have To Pick Up Litter

Litter is a real problem in our ward or at least, it would be without the extraordinary efforts of local volunteers. Every week, in all weathers, dedicated residents give up their time to keep our streets, parks, and green spaces clean. Their work often goes unseen, but its impact is impossible to miss.
It’s incredible how much they achieve, and they do it with positivity and pride. People like Julie Gay and Sheffield Litter Pickers who organises a monthly community litter pick in Totley, as well as events across nearby villages, are at the heart of this effort. Thanks to individuals like her and the many others who join in our ward is a cleaner, more welcoming place for everyone.
But the question remains: why do people drop litter in the first place? The reasons are complex, but I believe it comes down to a mix of carelessness, a lack of connection to the community, and the simple fact that too often, people think they won’t be held accountable.
If elected, I would continue to support Sheffield’s amazing litter pickers and champion the work they do across the city. Their contribution deserves recognition, resources, and ongoing encouragement. At the same time, we must address the root of the problem. Sheffield City Council has already taken steps by increasing fines for littering, which is a move in the right direction.
However, enforcement must go further. We should make better use of available technology to identify offenders and ensure consequences are applied. People are far less likely to litter if they might be caught.
Cleaner streets don’t happen by accident they are the result of community spirit, responsibility, and action. Let’s support those who lead by example and work together to make litter a thing of the past.
